What Is Permalink URL & How To Make It SEO Friendly

If you are a blogger, you must have heard the term "Permalink" or "Permalink URL". For a beginner, of course this word is foreign because this is only found in blogging. Well, therefore, in this post I will discuss in detail about the permalink and how to make it SEO friendly.

Is That Permalink?

Permalink is actually short for Permanent Link, which in Indonesian means permanent link. Supposedly, permalink means a link or link that is permanent to the page or post on the blog. However, the true meaning is not a link at all, but a URL. The meaninglessness of this meaning is due to the use of the word permalink which refers to the URL by the bloggers.

Permalink is used for web pages either in the form of posts or static pages. As the name suggests, Permalink is permanent so it becomes the identity of a blog page. Permalink is also unique, meaning there can't be the same. For example, the permalink URL for this page is: https://scrapemasters.com/services/search-engines-scraping/ (see browser's Address bar).

The red part is the core of the permalink, it can even be called the permalink itself. So, the permalink can also be interpreted as part of the URL that is after the blog domain.

How To Make Permalink SEO Friendly

Each site has a different permalink structure or pattern for the page or post. Sites that use self-hosted wordpress can even choose their own permalink pattern. To set the permalink structure in self-hosted wordpress, just log in to the dashboard -> select the Settings menu on the left sidebar -> Click the "permalinks" sub menu. A page will appear as shown. Then, select the permalink structure.

SEO friendly permalink, there are 2 permalink structures that I recommend the most because it has proven to be very good, both for SEO and for Users.

1. Use The Custom Permalink Feature

For both Blogger and WordPress, there is a "Custom Permalink" feature which functions to edit permalinks for each post. We can set what keywords we will enter and include them as part of the permalink. In wordpress, the custom permalink is just below the title column when making a post. While for blogger, there is the editor's right sidebar when making a post.

2. Enter keywords that are not in the title or content

scraping google one of the functions of permalink is to enrich your content keywords. So, use keywords that are different from those in the title or content, even if it's just a synonym for an existing keyword. Remember that search engine users don't always search for keywords that match the title of your post. Maybe the keyword is better is suitable for the keywords you enter in the permalink.

3. Use the Long Tail Keyword

Rather than using a keyword that consists of only word, it's better if you enter a long tail keyword in the permalink. Long tail keywords consist of 2-4 words. Examples of long tail keywords such as "how to create a website", "self-hosted wordpress tutorial", and so on.

4. Keyword Consists Of 3-5 Words

According to Mattcutts, head of Google Webspam, a good permalink is one that contains 3-5 words. Regardless of how many keywords are stored in it. The length of the word also depends on the number of characters per word, the length of the domain name, and the permalink pattern. So, you have to adjust it so that the keywords remain visible in the search engine. If it's too long, it will be truncated in the search results.

5. Keyword Relevance

However, the keywords you enter must be relevant. Really represent content. It must also be one of the main keywords. If the keyword you entered is irrelevant, the result will be considered spam.

6. Avoid The Use Of Conjunctions And Punctuation

Avoid using the words 'and', 'in', 'to', 'or', punctuation '?', '!', And the like on the permalink. Later so illogical? No problem, remember the permalink is not the content or the user must read. Permalink only keywords that represent content.
